Schneider Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock

DSC03502

Interesting.

Sort of like a thick heavy Aventinus. Still tasty, with lots of dark fruit taste. I think I prefer the normal Aventinus though.

Weyerbacher Insanity

DSC03500

This is actually pretty enjoyable. Vanilla dominates the initial taste. A slight hint of bitterness. Pretty sweet. But it really works. Its not heavy or syrupy. Actually glad I have 3 more bottles to drink.

Note: This is Barrel Aged Blithering Idiot Barleywine.

Great Divide Grand Cru

DSC03501

I was a little worried about this after I smelled it.

Its pretty enjoyable. Pretty sweet, with the usual dark fruit, cherry, etc.

Legend Brewing Imperial IPA

DSC03498

Not bad. A little sweet. A passable DIPA.

21st Amendment Monks Blood

DSC03497

Hmm. Well, its interesting. I think.

Not to sweet. Maybe a little bitter. Maybe a hint of raisin? I don't know. Its tastes weird. Not sure I like it.

Bonus Mandy Thoughts:
It smells like markers.

I want to like it. Its not sickly sweet. Its cold & carbonated.

But yeah, I guess its like someone dropped some candy in a beer. But the beer taste won out.

Stillwater Artisan Ales 25 to One

DSC03496

Brewed to celebrate Stillwater's first anniversary & Max's 25th.

This is freaking delicious. A lot of roasted malt flavor and its fairly bitter. Mandy thought it tasted pretty bitter & like coffee. The belgian yeast comes through nicely.

I'd buy another bottle if I saw it. I think this is my favorite by Stillwater so far.

Mikkeller I Beat U

DSC03495

Oooo. This is tasty. Lots of citrusy hoppy greatness. Mildly sweet.

This was a lot better than the Mikkeller/Brewdog collaboration beer (even though this is brewed at Brewdog).

It was fairly pricey though ($7).

Green Flash Le Freak

DSC03493

I'm still horrified that Green Flash went from 6 packs to 4 packs while also raising their prices (or at least the price I've seen offered).

Fairly bitter. I think the hops overpower anything the belgian yeast brings to the beer. Its good, I just don't think I'd buy another bottle.

Lagunitas Gnarleywine 2011

DSC03491

Really good beer for a really good price ($5).

Fairly malty and sweet but with a nice amount of bitterness.

Lagunitas The Hairy Eyeball

DSC03490

Really malty. I can't really taste the alcohol in it. Probably dangerous. Only a slight hint of hops.

Not bad. Not my favorite.

Full Sail IPA

DSC03488

Eh. Its a passable IPA. Nothing stands out but its drinkable.

Thursday, April 14, 2011

Firestone Walker Bouble Barrel Ale

DSC03486

Hmm. Not sure how to describe it. Kind of a dry tea-like bitterness. Its enjoyable.

He'Brew Bittersweet Lenny's RIPA

DSC03485

This is freaking delicious. Not overwhelmingly bitter. I definitely taste the rye malt. Some caramely sweetness also. I'll definitely buy it again.

Full Sail Bump in the Night

DSC03482

I kind of like this. No lingering bitterness. A slight taste of coffee & citrus. Not heavy.

Bonus Mandy Review:
Eh, its okay. But I'd rather have a mini-egg. [Goes to closet and grabs bag of Cadbury Mini-Eggs.]

He'brew Rejewvenator (Year of the Grape) (2010)

DSC03478

The label says this a cross between a dopplebock and a dubbel, but brewed with some grapes.

Its really sweet. Like, super sweet. It reminds me more a dubbel than a dopplebock. I'd skip it if I saw it again.

He'Brew Jewbelation 14th Anniversary Ale

[picture lost somewhere in the cloud]

Mandy told me I should drink this in celebration of the final night of Hanukkah.

14 Malts, 14 Hops, 14% Abv.

Its pretty black. And pretty sweet. Tastes strongly of molasses. Slightly bitter finish. Not bad, especially for the price ($5 for the bomber). Not sure I'd buy it again but its worth a taste.

Yuengling Bock

DSC03481

Really sweet & malty. Tastes better than the standard Yuengling. Not sure I'd be buying a six pack.

Thursday, April 7, 2011

Breckenridge 471 IPA

DSC03476

Kind of sweet. Fairly bitter up front. Slight citrus hops taste. Not sure I'd go out of my way to get it.

Schneider Aventinus 2007

DSC03474

DSC03475

This was aged in a historic ice cellar. Or so the label told me.

Pretty good. Maybe its a little muted compared to the fresh version? Still highly recommended.

Southern Tier Chokolat Stout

DSC03472

This was delicious. I have no idea where my notes are though. I just remember thinking I would buy this again.

Flying Dog Coffee Stout (Batch 2)

DSC03473

Its a stout. And its tastes like coffee!

Actually pretty good. If they sold this in 4 packs like the Double Dog PA, I'd probably buy it occasionally.

Stone Double Bastard Ale

DSC03411

I liked this so much that I didn't write down any notes when I took this picture (back in November or December?).

I went out and bought another bottle I liked it so much. Then I stuck it in the closet for a few months and forgot why I initially liked it.

Its not overly sweet, and has a dry, tea-like bitterness to it. I think I may have said the same thing about the Lucky Bastard ale. But this is really terrific. I think this is what I wish all of the overly hopped barleywines tasted like.

He'Brew Jewbelation Vertical (rye whiskey barrel aged)

photo(5)

Wow. Smells like a straight shot of whiskey. Slight chocolate taste in the finish. Really sweet. Some vanilla

Really boozy.

[The wow was not meant in a good way. This is an example of barrel aging gone terribly, terribly wrong. I can't remember now, but I may not have finished this.] [I'm also taking a guess that this was the beer, the menu only said "He'brew Jewbelation Rye Aged"]

Odell 90 Schilling

photo(4)

At some crappy "upscale" pizza place in Englewood, Co.

Slightly malty and hoppy. Heavier than a pale ale. Closer to a scotch ale maybe. Not bad. Not my favorite. I'll order another though instead of a Morretti.

Bruery Three French Hens

[picture lost to st. nick]

Pretty good. At the same time, nothing earth shattering. Standard belgian dark ale flavors. I think the alcohol maybe comes through too much.

Great divide chocolatte oak aged yeti

photo(3)

Tastes liked slightly oaked chocolate milk. Pretty darn good and drinkable.
