Ballast Point - Victory at Sea

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

Billed as an imperial porter.

Pretty darn enjoyable. Good amount of vanilla, chocolate and coffee flavor. I was worried it would be too thin, but the mouthfeel is perfect. Just enough carbonation. Not super thick or sweet. Enjoyable brew. Was easy to drink the whole bottle myself.

Uinta - Sea Legs

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

A barrel aged porter

The wood from the barrel aging is really strong. Very dry and oaky. Pretty easy drinking, but not superb. It's not bad, not great. I wouldn't get it again, but wouldn't turn down a glass (if anyone wants to pay $12 for the bottle for me!).

Victory - Red Thunder

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

I really liked this. There are definite traces of red wine left here, but they're not overpowering. Light cherry and wine flavors to go along with the roasted malt. Recommended.

DC Brau - Oaked Penn Quarter Porter

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

Picked up this bottle after a tour of the brewery.

This is pretty tasty, but perhaps a little thin. I guess it is a porter though. The barrel aging isn't overpowering, which is nice. A subtle oakiness and hint of whiskey is present. It works well. Only complaint is it could use a little more carbonation.

And: Debuting at the request of my devoted followers is the following rating:

4 out of 5 (Its a good beer, and I'd potentially buy it again)

Stone - Smoker Porter with Chipotle Peppers

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

This is actually pretty good. The heat from the peppers works well with the smoked malts. I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again, but its pretty interesting and tasty.

Full Sail - Top Sail

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

A little thin (but i guess it is a porter). Not bad, not great. Don't think I'd buy it again.

DuClaw - X-1 Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Chocolate Rye Porter

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

Definitely a barrel aged beer. Slightly chocolatey. Not too sweet or overly alcoholic. Enjoyable enough.

Sam Adams - Black & Brew/Old Fezziwig

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

This was pretty thin and tasted like a shot of coffee was just poured in a beer. Pretty watery tasting.

Better than the coffee stout...

Bayrischer Bahnhof Leipzig - Porticus

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

This isn't like a normal porter. First of all, it practically poured itself out of the bottle. Secondly, its tart. Not overwhelmingly tart, but its definitely there in the finish.

Left Hand - Fade to Black 2011

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

Hmm. This is apparently a "pepper porter". It is a little spicy (the kind that hits you in the back of the throat vs. burning up your tongue). Its..uh.. interesting? Its less pleasant than the Stone 11.11.11 though.

Magic Hat - Ravell, Encore & Howl

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

Porter brewed with vanilla

Pretty tasty.

Not Picture - Encore

A wheat ipa

This was actually pretty good. Slightly lemony with a nice bitterness. I'd drink it again.

Black Diamon - Peak XV Imperial Porter

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

This was just alright. A little thin. Slight chocolate taste. Doesn't really improve as it warms up.

Kona - Pipeline Porter

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

This is a little thinner than I expected. The coffee and bitterness is more prevalent in the finish, but is still subtle. I think I'd prefer something a little more aggressive.

DC Brau - Penn Quarter Porter

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

Pretty decent. I think I like the Port City porter better though.

Maui Brewing - Coconut Porter

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

Smells really sweet. If the name didn't say "coconut" I'm not sure I'd be able to place the taste. You can definitely pick out some toasted coconut flavor though. Definitely sweet.

Not sure I'm in love.

Ballast Point Black Marlin Porter

From Joe Drinks Dinner and Stuff

Not bad, not great. The Great Lakes porter is much better.

Mandy sorta liked this.

Port City Porter

From Apr 7, 2011

Hells yeah, DC area beer!

My first beer from one of the many DC breweries opening this year. Okay, Port City is technically out of Alexandria, VA, but its within the beltway (I think), so that counts for something.

I had the option to pick up either a six pack of their wit or the porter. No brainer for me. I was handsomely rewarded for my decision. This is one terrific porter.

It has a great roasted malt flavor, with hints of coffee and chocolate. There is slight bitterness there also.

Great beer and I would definitely buy it again.
